Six Organs Of Admittance-The Sun Awakens

Ben Chasny has been releasing albums under the moniker of “Six Organs of Admittance” since ‘98. Lately I have been digging his latest release, “The Sun Awakens”. A definite slow burner, “Sun” gives you the sensation of arduously climbing to the top of a mountain, and then discovering that it is in fact an active volcano. Layers of acoustic and electric guitar ebb and flow together, creating a refreshing sense of adventure. My favorite track on the album is “Attar”. It is very sinister and explosive, escalating quickly from a tribal stomp to a fiery conclusion. Check it out.

John Frusciante: A Man Of Magnificance

So my friend Bill turned me on to this guy called John Frusciante. I had no idea what to expect from the Chilis guitarist with a tumultuous past. It turns out he is one of the most innovative and soulful songwriters of the past two decades, with an impressive body of work that draws equally from artists such as Devendra Banhart and Jimi Hendrix. The two songs i have for today are from the “Brown Bunny” soundtrack. “Forever Away” is absolutely haunting, combining John’s signature howl with intricate guitar weavings. “Falling” is an absolute mindfuck of guitar accomplishment. So please indulge if you haven’t yet given John Frusciante to invade your world and make it a lot sweeter sounding.

Wet Hot American Blog Post

So i am a complete sucker for the exploits of ex-members of “The State”. It all started with the movie Wet Hot American Summer, quickly discovered by the comedy troupe, Stella. I had the opportunity last spring to see Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black, and they totally brought the house down. So naturally I am totally stoked that two of the core funny men, Michael Showalter and David Wain will be having some new output this year. Michael Showalter recorded some shows for an upcoming comedy album this month, and David Wain is the mastermind behind the new upcoming release, “The Ten” having been the writer and director of the film. Look out for both of these items in the months to come for some good laughs.<a <a

Matthew Good-Hospital Music: Album Review

A divorce, diagnosis of Bipolarity, breakdown and subsequent overdose. Matt Good has had a shitty year. Nevertheless, he has managed to come up with a piece of work that just sounds downright hopeful. Where there could be self indulgent bitterness, there is forgiveness or at least a sense of peace. Where there could be overblown theatrics in the production(see previous solo outing Avalanche)to the point of distraction, the songs always seem to hold back at just the right time. Neither as patient or anxious as the bulk of his discography, the warm production tones give the listener a feeling that can be likened to stepping into a steamy bath. All in all, Hospital Songs is Matt’s most crafted and mature album to date, the perfect album to bring us all into the second half of this year. I give it a B+

Beirut- Gulag Orkestar
So Heres to an extremely belated celebration of this fantastic debut album from Beirut, the work of melodic mastermind Zach Condon. I was extremely resistant to it at first, hearing only the glaring faults which would eventually become some of the strong points for me. Namely this is how brief and repetitive the album is. One needs only to engage the album in its natural habitat to unlock its secret powers. This is the open road. I unleashed it a couple weeks ago on a week long road trip and all of the melody made itself clear all at once. There are unabashed vocal tributes to Stephen Merrit and instrumental assistance from members of A Hawk And A Hacksaw, but the combo platter is something special that is Zach’s alone. So get those windows down and pump this gem up. Beirut-Scenic World.Mp3

Thee Stranded Horse

I don’t know much about “Thee Stranded Horse”. I know that it is the effort of a man named Yann Encre. I know that the sound of his slight, delicate vocals set against intricate, sparse guitar musings make a chill run down my spine every time i hear it. His debut album “Churning Strides” has been getting alot of spins from me lately, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Devendra Banhart or the forward version of “Pullhair Rubeye”.
