A divorce, diagnosis of Bipolarity, breakdown and subsequent overdose. Matt Good has had a shitty year. Nevertheless, he has managed to come up with a piece of work that just sounds downright hopeful. Where there could be self indulgent bitterness, there is forgiveness or at least a sense of peace. Where there could be overblown theatrics in the production(see previous solo outing Avalanche)to the point of distraction, the songs always seem to hold back at just the right time. Neither as patient or anxious as the bulk of his discography, the warm production tones give the listener a feeling that can be likened to stepping into a steamy bath. All in all, Hospital Songs is Matt’s most crafted and mature album to date, the perfect album to bring us all into the second half of this year. I give it a B+
