Brand New Kevin Drew-Spirit If…Album Review

The new Kevin Drew album “Spirit If…” is just about what you’d expect it to be: it plays like a very one sided Broken Social Scene album. Depending on your opinion of the band, this could either be a great thing or a disappointment. For me personally, its a bit of both. While Kevin’s blissed out lover anthems tend to be my favorites on any given BSS album, you get the feeling with this disc that he missed an opportunity to really explore some new sonic space and make a name for himself as a solo artist. Everything here sounds very familiar and will undoubtedly be classified in time by many as lesser BSS songs. That having been said, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some amazing chill supplying tunes on the album. The entire thing plays like the greatest night driving mix ever, with Kevin’s vocals as smooth and seductive as ever, with a gentle wall of guitars to house his croons. So while the direction of “Spirit If…” may not surprise you, you may be taken aback at how ridiculously satisfying of a listen it is. Look out for the new album on September 18th. I give it a B-.
