Video Of The Day: The Raconteurs- Salute Your Salution

It took me a while, but Consolers Of The Lonely has grown on me. Quick hitting, powerstance rock and roll. This video is no different. Unassuming at first, than mildly appealing, and finally becoming a visceral rock fest. Check it out.

Radiohead-House Of Cards: “Live” On Conan

To avoid using expanding their carbon footprint by using unnecessary jet fuel, Radiohead instead taped a performence of House Of Cards to replace a live performence on Conan. Here is that performence: LINK

Album Review: Colin Meloy Sings Live!

Following the recent release of two solo EP’s filled with covers of Morrissey and Shirley Collins, Decemberists front man Colin Meloy turns the focus to himself with his new full length solo acoustic album, Colin Meloy Sings Live!

There are a host of classic Decemberists tracks to choose from here, as well as a track from Meloy’s previous band, Tarkio, a Shirley Collins cover, and the fantastic unreleased tune, “Wonderful”. Meloy’s trademark nasal crooning flits around each of these songs, making them sound warm and inviting despite the sparse instrumental arrangement. The between song banter and crowd chatter are kept to a minimum, but still provide enough personality and wittiness to recreate the feeling of being at a live show.

A particularly humorous moment comes with a performance of the unfinished track “Dracula’s Daughter” which is prefaced by Meloy saying that it is the worst song that he ever wrote. He proceeds to launch into the particularly wacky cut to great comedic effect. Other standouts are “The Gymnast, High Above The Ground”, and the epic “California One/Youth And Beauty Brigade”.

Despite the warm “around the campfire” vibe, the songs performed here just don’t sound that much different from their originally recorded counterparts. As a result, fans, particularly those who have not seen Meloy or the Decemberists live, will marvel at the intimate glimpse this release gives into Colin Meloy’s live prowess. Newcomers or casual fans will simply scratch their heads and pick up a Decemberists studio release instead.

Tour: My Bloody Valentine Returns to the States

After a 16 year hiatus, the sultans of shoegaze will grace the ol US of A with their presence on stage at the annual All Tomorrows Party’s festival and six other U.S. dates. What I wouldn’t give to create a device that would extract me from finals week to any one of those dates…sigh. In any event its time to blow the dust off of your Loveless LP and get down. I haven’t done it in a while, and I highly recommend it to anyone else who hasn’t. Plus it makes great late night studying music.

Song Of The Day: My Morning Jacket-Evil Urges

The new My Morning Jacket album, titled Evil Urges, will be released on June 10th. This date cannot come soon enough for lead singer Jim James. He recently released a statement discussing the downsides to having instant gratification in our technologically advancing generation. As a result of the instant distribution of low quality bootlegs of the new record, the band has decided to release the title track as an indicator of the quality of the new material. Well I will say this, the quality is just fine with me! This sample track shows the group pushing their evolution even further, adding an eccentric twist to their spacey folk rock demeanor. At this rate they will be giving Wilco a run for their money in the near future. Check it out in all of its shiny new glory!

News: Weezer Releases 30 Second Sample Of New Song- Pork And Beans

UPDATE: So the whole track has now been leaked! This is easily the best song I have heard from them since the 90’s. So go quickly and get it NOW

This sample track is little to go by, but the recently released 30 second clip of the new single Pork And Beans has me pretty stoked. It has the aesthetic flash of the newer material and a little bit of the crunch and soul of the earlier material that has been lacking over the last decade. At the very least this should be a huge hit for the summer. But don’t take my word for it CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF

The new album will likely be self titled but known as the “Red Album” and will be released on June 17th. Pork and Beans will be released April 22nd. For some insight into the mind if the mad genius himself, check out this clip of Rivers trying to write a song with help from you tube viewers.

Movie Trailer: Mister Lonely

I guess at this point I would consider myself a Harmony Korine fan. Though films like Gummo and Julien Donkey Boy are uncomfortably awkward and disturbing, theres something about his work that demands attention. Besides the man know how to keep company, he has worked with the likes of Larry Clark, Chloe Sevigny, and Will Oldham. He also notably wrote the lyrics to the song “Harm Of Will” of off Bjork’s Vespertine about Oldham. So it stands to reason that his new flick, Mister Lonely will at least be worth a viewing. Check out the trailer:
